"Intensely realized and beautifully orchestrated Gothic horror." —Joyce Carol Oates

"A match for readers who enjoyed Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House." Booklist (starred review)

At the end of a dark prairie road, nearly forgotten in the Kansas countryside, is the Finch House. For years it has remained empty, overgrown, abandoned. Soon the door will be opened for the first time in decades. But something is waiting, lurking in the shadows, anxious to meet its new guests…

When best-selling horror author Sam McGarver is invited to spend Halloween night in one of the country’s most infamous haunted houses, he reluctantly agrees. At least he won’t be alone; joining him are three other masters of the macabre, writers who have helped shape modern horror. But what begins as a simple publicity stunt will become a fight for survival. The entity they have awakened will follow them, torment them, threatening to make them a part of the bloody legacy of Kill Creek.

A good read!

It’s nothing you haven’t read before, but definitely worth your time! Really captured the essence of why I started reading horror in the first place. Also one of the only books that’s kept my interest in the past few years. The story was enthralling and I found myself actually annoyed when I had to stop reading. I appreciate this book for renewing my love for reading.

It was ok

Started out really good, building some interesting characters and situations. Then, all of the sudden, it was boring as all get out. The chapters didn’t seem to flow, like they were their own short story that led nowhere. Feels like the author couldn’t stand to have the main protagonist go more than 3 sentences without reminding us he had childhood trauma that haunted him (tedious). The female protagonist was shallow and 1 dimensional, like the author wasn’t sure how a strong confident woman was supposed to behave. The haunted house bits were an absolute snooze fest, with spooky sequences just randomly happening and then never referenced again, almost like he forgot there was supposed to be scary bits in a “haunted house”. The twist in the second half was interesting, but not memorable. I did like the ending, it was actually engaging and made me want to finish, not just hate read because I refuse to stop reading something I paid for.

Read it, don’t read it, won’t change your life one bit. Totally forgettable.
