New York Times bestselling author Roy Johansen delivers a thrill-a-minute read featuring a fearless heroine for hire.
Kendra Michaels, blind before gaining her sight via a revolutionary surgical procedure, offers her razor-sharp senses to assist her friend Jessie Mercado in a baffling case. An army vet and former bodyguard for the rich and famous, Jessie has faced all kinds of danger but one thing the motorcycle-riding private investigator has never encountered before is an incarceration consultant.
Preparing wealthy people to go to prison is big business. When Owen Blake of Mamertine Consulting hires Mercado to find his missing partner, their suspect list is filled with recently released white-collar criminals, a few drug kingpins, and a couple of murderers to keep things interesting.
As witnesses turn up dead and car chases leave destruction in their wake, Jessie and Kendra learn just how far someone will go to keep the fate of one man hidden. But why? Together they must hunt down the lethal secrets of Blake’s company, hell-bent on staying one step ahead of disaster.
In this propulsive series spinoff from bestseller Johansen (the Kendra Michaels series), PI Jessie Mercado, Kendra's friend and occasional colleague, takes center stage. Michaels, "a San Diego music therapist whose powers of observation made her a go-to consultant in several high-profile law enforcement investigations," introduces Jessie to a new client, Owen Blake, the co-owner of an incarceration consultancy, which handles financial and personal needs for people who are serving prison sentences. Blake's partner, Carl Ferris, has disappeared, and he wants Jessie to find him. Though she suspects that Blake may be hiding something, she nonetheless agrees to take his case. She's assisted by her new boyfriend, "the hottest actor on the planet," who decides to put the skills he has honed working on Marvel Superhero flicks to good use. Kendra also lends a hand. When the first person Jessie questions about Ferris is murdered and she too is attacked, she realizes there's much more at stake than a missing person. Relentless action and dastardly villains keep the pages turning. Johansen, who usually collaborates with mother Iris Johansen, delivers the goods. Agents: Andrea Cirillo and Rebecca Scherer, Jane Rotrosen Agency. Correction: An earlier version of this review incorrectly noted that this book was part of an existing series.
This book is engaging, doesn’t drag on, difficult to put down, and definitely looking forward to the next book in the series!
This is fascinating
It was great having another episode with Jessie Mercado and Kendra Michaels. Throw in a business with prisoners, include a missing person and you have a killer mystery to help solve. Good luck to all amateur PIs on this mystery to unravel; its killer!
