Publisher Description
This story is of a Negro Share Cropping family who lived in East Texas in the late 1930’s. Their names were Jim and Bertha Jones. Their children were Warren, Toby and Symantha. The name of the small farming community where they lived was called Killjoy. Through their perseverance, strength, and determination they were able to withstand the race hatred, bigotry, and segregation that was part of the fabric of the South.
Jim and Bertha were aware of the fact Mr. Johnson, who they share cropped for, was cheating them blind but for the time they could do nothing about it. After the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941, this country declared war. Massive production was needed in all the war plants that were located mostly in the North. The Government sent recruiters throughout the South to recruit workers.
