Born in 1826 in Brooklyn, New York he was an active singer in the choir of St. John's Chapel on Varick Street, New York City. In the period of 1850 to 1882 he composed about 120 songs and the most popular of these were When This Cruel War Is Over (1863), Jeff in Petticoats (1865) and Sweet Genevieve (1869) along with one cantata, Joseph in Egypt. The Kingston Waltz with the tempo marking Vivace was composed in 1851 and dedicated to a To Miss Ann Eliza Wilson
