A draper's assistant inherits a fortune and discovers that money buys him nothing he actually wants, least of all a place among the people who have it. Wells had been apprenticed to a draper himself and hated every hour of it; this is the funniest and kindest of his social novels. This edition binds 57 plates of painting with the text, among them works by Edvard Munch, George Percy Jacomb-Hood and Constantin Hansen, alongside two restored and coloured illustrations.
