Publisher Description

Abstract: The evolution of the speech and the social actions of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in Chile between 1948 and 1990 was forged by five specific historical moments : the arrival of the Oblates in Chile, the Second Vatican Council, the election of Salvador Allende, the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet and the transition to democracy. The study of the historical context shows that the stronger the socio-political contestation is in the country, the higher the missionaries became politicized. If at first the political conservatism of Chile is associated with the orthodoxy of the mission, the period between 1970 and 1973 shows a radicalization of the Chilean political life that leads to a greater politicization of the missionaries. Dictatorship put a stop to this politicization that is then slightly revived when the transition to democracy occurs.
