Was Cinderella’s stepfamily really all that bad? And was Prince Charming really that charming? This nuanced fantasy recasts the familiar fairy tale from the “evil” stepmother’s point of view. After two brief marriages, Lady Etheldreda Verity Isolde Tremaine Bramley has a mountain of debt; a decaying manor house; two beloved daughters, Mathilde and Rosamund; and Elin, a sullen, standoffish stepdaughter who does nothing to help improve the family fortunes and is just biding her time until she can lay her hands on her dowry. The prince’s ball could be Lady Tremaine and her daughters’ salvation, until Prince Simeon’s eyes fall upon Elin, who makes her own dramatic entrance into the occasion. Worse still, there’s a darker purpose behind the ball and the prince’s attention, and it’s up to Lady Tremaine to save her prickly, dangerously naïve stepdaughter once it becomes clear that Elin’s not headed toward a happy ending. Fantastic Re imagination of classic Villain!!
I really enjoyed Lady Tremaine—it offered such a fresh and surprisingly emotional take on a character I thought I already knew. Instead of a one-dimensional villain, we get a much deeper look into her past, her motivations, and the heartbreak that helped shape who she became.
What stood out most to me was how human Lady Tremaine felt in this story. The author does a beautiful job of balancing sympathy with accountability—you don’t necessarily agree with her choices, but you begin to understand them. It adds a layer of complexity that made the reading experience feel richer and more thought-provoking.
The atmosphere was also wonderfully done—dark, elegant, and a little haunting, which fits perfectly with the tone of the story. If you enjoy reimagined fairy tales or stories that explore the “why” behind classic villains, this is definitely worth picking up.
Overall, I’d give it 4 stars. It’s engaging, well-written, and offers a compelling new perspective on a familiar tale.
