Customer Reviews
A delightful journey of self discovery while exploring the battle fields of the Great War
This murder mystery is told through the eyes of a modern day Scotland Yard inspector on holiday in Belgium biking through the battlefields of the Great War. The preface sets the stage for the "accidental" deaths, then part way through the inspectors holiday his unique skills are summoned to solve what eventually is classified as a crime.
The author has done a fantastic job of vividly describing the hero's journey, the people, places, nature & especially the meals & beverages he enjoys. While most murder mysteries focus on the suspects, and events, this tale pivots more on the places & battles of the Great War. He touches on the English & Canadian soldier poets who through their verse expressed their views on the war. History permeates every clod of dirt underfoot of the hero, and at times I felt the enormity of loss that parents of this era had to suffer through. Furthermore the author is clearly a fan of fine cuisine. I made the fateful mistake of reading a key section prior to dinner, and had to ask my family to move up our dinner reservation to quiet my envious stomach.
This book is very well researched. Hopefully someday I can tour Belgium as the author did, and pay my respects in person to all those souls who gave their lives to protect the freedom we enjoy today.
