Functional Grammar (Dik 1989, 1997) is a linguistic theory that distinguishes functional relations at three levels: the semantic, the syntactic and the pragmatic level. At each of these levels, functions are considered to be primitive notions of linguistic description and explanation. In this paper we explore the senses in which the term primitive are used. The conclusion is drawn that in the framework of Functional Grammar primitive does not mean undefined notion, but concept by means of which other concepts are defined; or formally unconstrained concept. 1.
