Thomas Carlyle (4 Dec1795 – 5 Feb 1881) was a Scottish essayist, historian and satirical writer, known for works like Sartor Resartus and The French Revolution. Considered one of the most important social commentators of his time, he presented many lectures during his lifetime with certain acclaim in the Victorian era. 

“Latter-Day Pamphlets” was a series of "pamphlets" published in 1850, in vehement denunciation of what he believed to be the political, social, and religious imbecilities and injustices of the period. The work expresses central theme  — the corrosive effects of populist politics and of a culture driven by greed.Carlyle also attacked the prison system, which he believed to be too liberal, and democratic parliamentary government.
