Lazarus Bridge

Since 1940, the bridge over the Lisorios Gorge has been bombed, shelled, mined and written off as destroyed more times than anyone cares to count. Every time, it is carrying German traffic again within the week. The men sent to kill it have given it a name of their own: Lazarus.

Now the Special Operations Executive has one card left to play. The real invasion is aimed at Italy, and London needs the Germans looking the wrong way — convinced the blow is coming in Greece. So they send a team nobody will miss. Men so far outside the rules of proper soldiering that if they vanish, no one will ask a single question.

Dropping the bridge is only half the job. They have to make enough noise doing it to turn an entire German garrison towards a threat that was never real.

Getting there means crossing a country tearing itself apart. Royalist and communist bands are too busy killing each other to trouble the occupiers. Komitadji chiefs sell their loyalty by the morning, to whoever looks like winning by noon. And if the impossible happens — if this ragged, unwanted unit puts Lazarus in the river for good — there are still a hundred miles of hostile mountain between them and the sea, with no promise of a plane, a boat, or a way home.

Lazarus Bridge is a white-knuckle wartime adventure in the great tradition of the impossible mission: a handful of men sent to fail, and too stubborn to oblige.
