The one that you created is thoroughly enjoyable. The familiarity of dark against light, good against evil, and the machinations of politics were tangled together beautifully. The friendships were huge plus.

This book for you if you read at a HS level, don't have critical thinking skills, don't pay attention to detail, and enjoy flimsy, weak plots.
