Publisher Description

Jean Valjean spent nineteen years in prison — five for stealing bread, fourteen for trying to escape. Valjean tries to make a new life for himself, but he cannot escape the stigma of his past, nor the oppressive watch of the cold-hearted Inspector Javert.

Fantine is a working class woman barely scraping together enough for herself and her young daughter Cosette. Both mother and daughter are exploited by the greedy innkeeper Thénardiers, who keeps demanding more and more money. Fantine’s health begins to deteriorate, and in her desperation she begins to consider prostitution.

These are but two of the unfortunate souls from Victor Hugo’s massive novel about rebellion, redemption, authority, romance, and justice. Les Misérables is a rich, complex, profound, and heart-breaking work of historical fiction, and one of the greatest novels of all time.

This includes all five volumes, as well as illustrations by Émile Bayard. Also, many of the more poetic passages are preserved in the original French, side-by-side with an English translation. (Can't do that on Kindle!)

Good so far

I haven't noticed this missing any amount of text as of yet. The novel is 1400 pages but the app registers what can fit, under default settings, on a screen as one page so it counts as if it is 6000 pages that way you can bookmark and count down to the next chapter easier. 6000 pages on a phone screen = ~1400 pages of text. This does appear to be the full story, all volumes, books, and chapters.

Beautiful

I fell in love with the musical before being too aware that the book existed. I decided to give it a read just to see how similar it was, and it's a really fantastic experience! The book is full of extra, incredibly insightful side passages that wouldn't belong in a musical, but make the story so much richer and actually pleasurable to read. And for anyone who's wondering: there are multiple translations of this text available - this version is by Isabel Hapgood.
