Publisher Description
These fictional letters were written while Rousseau was residing in the home of the Marquis de Bellegarde but were not seen until after Rousseau's death. Because the papers were not marked among those indicating Rousseau specifically wanted them published, the letters were printed posthumously on the authority of the Marquis, who claimed there might have been some truth to the roughly sketched novel. The compilation illustrates what was perhaps another epistolary novel Rousseau had envisioned but had not completed, and while a rough draft, the letters create both a story as well as a moral, with the same eloquent writing evident in Julie; or the New Heloise.
