First published as Leviathan or The Matter, Forme and Power of a Common Wealth Ecclesiasticall by Thomas Hobbes in 1651, Leviathan is a treatise on the origins and ends of government , a defense of secular monarchy, written while the Puritan Commonwealth ruled England.
