Publisher Description

Liespotting shows how to use the latest techniques to spot deception in work and life situations.

GET TO THE TRUTH

People--friends, family members, work colleagues, salespeople--lie to us all the time. Daily, hourly, constantly. None of us is immune, and all of us are victims. According to studies by several different researchers, most of us encounter nearly 200 lies a day.

Now there's something we can do about it. Pamela Meyer's Liespotting links three disciplines--facial recognition training, interrogation training, and a comprehensive survey of research in the field--into a specialized body of information developed specifically to help business leaders detect deception and get the information they need to successfully conduct their most important interactions and transactions.

Some of the nation's leading business executives have learned to use these methods to root out lies in high stakes situations. Liespotting for the first time brings years of knowledge--previously found only in the intelligence community, police training academies, and universities--into the corporate boardroom, the manager's meeting, the job interview, the legal proceeding, and the deal negotiation.

WHAT'S IN THE BOOK?

Hodge-podge

This book is poorly written. The author seems to have been unable to make up her mind if this was to be a Master's thesis, a "dummies" book, a training manual or a bathroom read. The beginning is a hodge-podge of history, anecdotes and "tips". The text is festooned with references that make it apparent that the author is not a subject-matter expert, but instead performed a literature survey and wrote a paper. The strange structure and divergent chapter lengths make it obvious that the paper was then padded out to make a sellable book length. The "tips" and annoying paragraph headings appear to have been added afterward to try to change the style to that of a "dummies" book. To be fair, there is a core of useful information, scattered across 600 pages; but I found myself annoyed trying to get to the useful bits, and more annoyed trying to tie them together through the padding and literature survey. I'm sorry I paid money for this book.

Excellent information

I really enjoyed reading this book as I am big into non-fiction material. I found the information on detecting lies extremely helpful in my work as a middle school counselor. After reading the book and looking back on my experiences, I now know who is a likely lier and who is telling the truth.

This makes you think twice...

Being in the field of Educational Administration, I make several decisions a day. Some are instantaneous, and others require much thought. I read this book because there are a variety of ongoing things that employees claim to always need, or more simply, I am always navigating sensitive situations. I was hoping that I could learn a few straightforward techniques that would allow me to be more confident in some of my decision making, when I do have those "hunches". I find that this book was not only very easy to read, but it's design is set up well for future ongoing reference. The material taught is simple to learn, easy to put into immediate action, and affirming when you might be "on the fence" with a negative hunch. What has been more entertaining is that I have found its actually a fun detective tool when contemplating which of my two children (ages 11 and 13) are the guilty party, since they ALWAYS seem to blame each other for the naughty deed!
