Publisher Description
John Crowley's masterful Little, Big is the epic story of Smoky Barnable, an anonymous young man who travels by foot from the City to a place called Edgewood—not found on any map—to marry Daily Alice Drinkawater, as was prophesied. It is the story of four generations of a singular family, living in a house that is many houses on the magical border of an otherworld. It is a story of fantastic love and heartrending loss; of impossible things and unshakable destinies; and of the great Tale that envelops us all. It is a wonder.

A Family Saga, with a Side of Mystery
Some of the most affective prose passages I have ever read infusing an effusive story which diffuses in a flux of metaphysical musings and cultural architecture.
Little, Big
"Little, Big" is simply astounding. Crowley Somehow (intentional capitalization) interweaves Shakespeare, nursery rhymes, the Brothers Grimm, the English Romantic poets, medieval folklore, and much more, into a multi-layered love story that emerges finally into a time and place wholly unexpected. This is true fantasy literature that will be read, studied, and loved long into the real future.
Exquisite magical realism
This truly epic tale spans generations and weaves itself in and out of folk and faerie tale, and the greater Western Canon, in an exploration of how our small personal stories work within the larger stories of our families, histories and cultures.
A personal favorite that endlessly continues to be part of my life as the cultural and literary references constantly reveal themselves over time. A gorgeous, enveloping, poetic world of a book!
