Ruth Amey wants to retire and her only option is the son of her dead husband's brother, David. David goes along with her ideas, if that's what it takes to get her wealth. David becomes her pretty protegee Primrose. Once in charge of her company though, he wants to sell it and return to being David. Or he may remain as Primrose as that has a lot of attractions.

Ruth initially thinks David/Primrose could take over the running of her company to let her retire. It's soon evident that David is neither clever or capable. David soon finds Ruth has other plans for him and those plans do not mean a return to being male any time soon. Quite the opposite.
