INSPIRATION FOR THE NETFLIX SERIES DEPT. Q
In this tenth installment of the New York Times and #1 internationally bestselling series, the team must solve the cold case that has put their own leader behind bars, a place where his enemies are plentiful and time is quickly running out.
When the head of Department Q, Detective Carl Mørck, finds himself handcuffed in a police car headed for Copenhagen's Vestre prison, he realizes that a violent case from his past has finally caught up with him. But he is being framed. Someone has a million-dollar bounty on his head to make sure he doesn't talk, putting him in grave danger among the prison's incarcerated criminals and corrupt officers.
Carl's colleagues at the Copenhagen Police Department instantly turn their backs on him, leaving the ever-loyal Department Q team as his only hope. With only one another to trust and Carl's battle against the unknown mastermind's henchmen worsening by the day, they must work faster than ever before if they are to clear his name—and save his life.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
In the stellar conclusion to Adler-Olsen's Department Q series (after The Shadow Murders), intradepartmental turmoil rattles the Copenhagen cold case unit. The action kicks off with Carl Mørck, Department Q's lead detective, being taken into custody when a suitcase he agreed to store for a colleague 15 years earlier is opened and revealed to contain large quantities of drugs and cash. Though Carl had just broken up a network of murderers led by a wealthy Danish businesswoman, his colleagues on the police force—with the exception of those in Department Q—turn on him. As he awaits trial, Carl receives anonymous threats from someone who wants him dead before the court can investigate the origins of the contraband. Certain that Carl's been framed, the other members of Department Q—Rose Knudsen, Haffez el-Assad, and Gordon Taylor—defy their bosses to help clear his name, imperiling their own careers in the process. Adler-Olsen sends this excellent series out on a high note, reaping the benefits of his deep character work in the previous novels. Fans will be thrilled.
Customer Reviews
Not up to standards
I’ve read all the previous Department Q books and was really looking forward to this one. Unfortunately, Mr Adler-Olsen would have done his readers a favor by NOT writing it and leaving a bad taste in our mouths.
The story, such as it was … was not believable, the characters have grown scale and the translation was shaky.
I’ll end it here before I say something really nasty.
Disappointing finale to a fine series
The first third of this novel is so turgid that one would think Adler-Olsen was getting paid by the word. It does pick up pace and interest...but I wouldn't have finished it if I hadn't bought it. Too bad.
