Publisher Description
Novelist Mark Childress ("Crazy in Alabama," "Georgia Bottoms") happened to be born in Monroeville, Alabama -- the town Harper Lee called Maycomb when she wrote about it in the classic "To Kill a Mockingbird." For years, as a journalist, Childress was told to pursue an interview with the famously reclusive author, who refused all entreaties. This essay describes the importance of Harper Lee's novel to the Southern fiction of today, and goes a distance toward explaining why Harper Lee prefers to remain a figure of mystery. 2,500 words.

How Kind Southerners Write the Wrongs....Especially on Others!
Still not being certain how this happened, but having learned long ago that simply accepting the unexplained brings about such miracles more and more often, Mark Childress' all too brief work here literally appeared on my IPad as I was surfing the web for "how best to find a co-author....not "ghost writer," because of my desire that honest credit be given for the writing of my story, which includes many authors like Stephen King, Ken Kesey, Hunter Thompson, Arthur C. Clarke && Harper Lee, all who have signed books for my publishing company and/or (FlatSigned Press LLC) I've worked with in some other small capacity. It was our copy of the 1960 First Printing of "TKAM" that Random House used to reproduce for all their Special 45th Anniversary Editions and over the years Ms. Lee autographed dozens of books for me and associates of mine. But much if not most of what Childress writes here in his compacted and enlightening work was new and welcomed news to me! He obviously leaves out much more he knows or believes. But like any great and generous work of writing including his own novels, the more I learn and know, the more I want to know more! Mark, Thank YOU for taking your time to share this work, your intimate knowledge that only you would know, with all of us who are worthy of miracles like these!
