The opening of the new landmark exhibition "Alexander von Humboldt and the United States" at the Smithsonian American Art Museum had to be postponed due to Covid 19 until the fall of 2020. Complementing the show, the nonfiction book "Looking for Humboldt" is timely. It takes the reader on journeys of exploration through the colorful landscapes and cultures of the American Southwest. It was Humboldt who put the region on the map – a physical map he shared with Thomas Jefferson. He was also the first scientist to understand and document climate change 200 years ago. We didn’t listen to him long enough back then. Perhaps now we will. Humboldt is gaining momentum: his ideas are as relevant and exciting as ever.
