We see the events of this story through the John Ridd’s eyes. He is a yeoman of Oare parish in Somerset. It is the year 1673. John is a twelve-year old- boy, whose father was recently killed by the Doones of Bagworthy – a clan of outlaws terrorising Exmoor. At age of 14, John falls into the Bagworthy water accidentally and is carried away by the river into the Doone Valley. There he meets Lorna Doon, who shows him how to get out of the valley safely. After that, he never set a foot on Doones’ territory.
One day, his uncle Reuben is attacked by the Doones on the route. After that, Reuben insists that John takes him to a place from where he can see the Doones valley. While gazing into the valley, John notices the small figure of Lorna on the place where they first met and he realises that they are meant to be together.
So, John returns to the valley and starts a dangerous courtship of Lorna. Although at first this fifteen-year-old girl doesn’t fall in love with John, he wins her heart. Being in such a dangerous, forbidden love is difficult for both of them, especially when new dangers appear.
