Publisher Description
“Readers won’t be able to get enough of these dope-ass characters.” —Elizabeth Acevedo, author of Clap When You Land
Hitch meets The Sun Is Also a Star in this “mega swoon-worthy, effortlessly cool” (Casey McQuiston, New York Times bestselling author) novel about a self-professed teen love doctor with a popular radio segment who believes he can get a girl who hates all things romance to fall in love with him in only three dates.
Prince Jones is the guy with all the answers—or so it seems. After all, at seventeen, he has his own segment on Detroit’s popular hip-hop show, Love Radio, where he dishes out advice to the brokenhearted.
Prince has always dreamed of becoming a DJ and falling in love. But being the main caretaker for his mother, who has multiple sclerosis, and his little brother means his dreams will stay just that and the only romances in his life are the ones he hears about from his listeners. Until he meets Dani Ford.
Dani isn’t checking for anybody. She’s focused on her plan: ace senior year, score a scholarship, and move to New York City to become a famous author. But her college essay keeps tripping her up and acknowledging what’s blocking her means dealing with what happened at that party a few months ago. And that’s one thing Dani can’t do.
When the romantic DJ meets the ambitious writer, sparks fly. Prince is smitten, but Dani’s not looking to get derailed. She gives Prince just three dates to convince her that he’s worth falling for. Three dates for the love expert to take his own advice, and just maybe change two lives forever.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Get ready for a smart, refreshing, and very fun take on high school romance. Ebony LaDelle’s debut novel follows Prince Jones, the popular host of a local Detroit radio love-line show, as he tries to date his studious classmate Dani Ford, who is very much “not a rom-com type of girl.” The couple’s courtship unfolds from their alternating perspectives, giving us a deeper understanding of their fraught connection. When he isn’t caring for his ailing mother, Prince woos Dani with a bookstore scavenger hunt involving her favorite Black authors. Meanwhile, Dani, haunted by an experience she isn’t ready to share, worries Prince is too good to be true. LaDelle has crafted a savvy and sensitive fairy tale where her characters must deal with real-life issues before they can have their happily ever after.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Both wholly modern and interwoven with nostalgic cultural references, debut author LaDelle's romance blends comedic banter and poignant connection in a story about two Black teens giving love a chance. Focused on her dreams of becoming "the next Maya or Audre," Danielle Ford avoids both dating and thinking about an incident of sexual assault that has her self-isolating from everyone she loves. Then she engages with classmate Prince—also known as Detroit radio relationship expert DJ LoveJones—who wagers that he can get her to fall in love with him in three dates. Dreaming of a future making radio "honest and relatable," charming, confident Prince also cares for his little brother and his mother, who has advanced multiple sclerosis, and questions his dreams of moving to New York City. With the clock running down to graduation, and on their dates, Dani and Prince find that their romance may be just the thing they need to begin facing their problems head-on. The teens' connection acts as the story's warming center, as LaDelle showcases in their alternating voices the importance of support systems and asking for help, foregrounding young Black love in themes of community, creative passion, and deep appreciation of Black culture. Ages 12–up.

I would love a sequel to see where Dani and Prince end up. If they are together and the paths they will take in college.
