Lt. Col. John Bell in Her Majesty's Service, a career that spanned a half century. He fought his way from Lisbon to Toulouse, on foot. Wounded at Salamanca and promoted to Sgt.- Maj. A decade in Londonderry and then a long sea voyage to assume his duties with a Royal Newfoundland Veterans Company. He spent two years as a militia Captain assigned to protect the border from military incursions. In 1846 the Lt. Gov. appointed John to be Collector of Customs, Port of Wallaceburgh. Citizens of Chatham, Wallaceburg, Baby's Point, Port Lambton, Sombra, Sandwich, Windsor, Amherstburg, and also Detroit and Cleveland may find the text especially informative as it illuminates many aspects of trade, commerce and yes smuggling in the mid 19th century. Much of this material, until now, has been sequestered in the Canadian National Archives.
