Maggie's Dad had a lot of complicated relationships
There was a lot of resentment being held onto by most of the characters. They all had a lesson to learn about trust and acceptance. It was nice that once Powell realized he truly loved Antonia and that Maggie was his daughter his behavior and attitudes changed.
