Maria Chapdelaine
I read this book upon Helene’s insistence. It is also my first e-book that I read. The Characters are very believable. The actor, Maria, is caught in a web of growing up and seeing changes occurring around her and the family. The other people,,,her parents, brothers.sister, friends are caught in the rushing flow of changing times with nature showing their shortcomings.. it is a thought provoking story because all have been caught up in the movement of time. Are we going forward? Backward? Standing still? Are we moving too slow? Too Fast? Or not moving? Or making bad decisions? Its all there ….from when they crossed back on the river to their farm and the ice breaks just as they make over..to when Francois makes a bad decision…to when Mama Chapdelaine dies after taking sick…..One never knows when the time is right to change…or make change…..or is change needed. In the end Maria makes a promise for the future..but who knows. Something may happen to render asunder her plans…It ends like a Hitchcock thriller…the readers can argue how it will end in their respective minds…Much like the ending of "Quo Vadis” which door should you pick? The left?Right? Middle? But you cannot make no decision. Even you if decide to not make to do anything…you will have done it…..It’s a good book..written in 1913…You can still feel the cold wind/snow ……Ronnie Houle
