Two rival claimants to the empty Markan throne meet in battle. When Marcus Vintner defeats his cousin Branad Vintner, it seems the matter is settled. But when General Kelanus is accused of murder, Marcus is implicated and all claims to the throne are suspended.
Zenepha, an intelligent and literate sylph, is plunged into the depths of Markan politics when he is thrust unwillingly onto the throne.
A third claimant, Hingast, is traveling to Marka, determined to press his claim and prepared to use force to get his way.
Marcus and Kelanus must prove their innocence before it is too late and the throne again falls into abeyance or, worse, to Hingast.

Interesting but Never In the Moment
The story is interesting, though I wish the author would practice “showing, not telling” more since a chunk of the story relies on things having already past. A lot of things are talked ABOUT but never really actually shown or described in a vivid detail as happening in the moment. The story also just blatantly tells you the emotional struggles and plans happening throughout it, and I prefer a “2+2=“ style of writing, where we as the audience have to figure out through the little details and descriptions what is happening and what the characters are thinking.
