Publisher Description

The Great Impact nearly broke the human race. Very few of our ancestors survived the ash and ruin. They were determined to never face extinction again. They figured out how to spread across the galaxy, traveling through anti-space, or the deep, to establish the worlds. The journey was not without cost, however. Some of them...changed.

Some call them mutants. Others call them evolved. We call them markers because they mark any deepships that they travel on. Their marks attract the ravens, an elemental force from the deep with a penchant for total destruction. The Law keeps them isolated to protect us.

The markers hate us because we have freedom. Their suicide attacks leave thousands dead in their wake. The survivors are even worse off, the ghosts of the attackers and their victims seared into their being.

The markers killed my family. They killed my friends. They took my sanity. And now they'll pay.

Definitely worth the read

This was a well written piece of fiction that pulls from familiar themes from sci-fi, fantasy, and spy novels in a way I’ve not seen before. This me feeling that I was getting something entirely new while remaining in territory that is as familiar and comfortable as being wrapped in my favorite blanket.

The author takes a lot of inspiration from the likes of Orson Scott Card and Brandon Sanderson while creating a style all his own. This universe is one which I would like to see explored more in depth.

This book was very well written, and was a quick and thoroughly enjoyable read. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

Great new sci-fi

This novel is just fantastic. The universe that Geoffrey Baxter has created is rich, unique, and draws you in time and time again. I thoroughly enjoyed the variety of characters (including an incredibly strong female lead), the settings (multiple cities, planets, locales, and space vessels), and scenes of action (everything from tense family situations to hand to hand combat to intense space battles against the boogeymen of this universe, the "ravens"). I found the writing to be easy to read without sounding juvenile. If you are looking for a new science fiction read, definitely check this one out!
