Marvela and the Broken Waters

Transformed from mortal to mermaid, Marvela leaves the Amazon waters for the depths of the sea to guard tribal relics from shipwrecks on the Caribbean floor. With a fellow mermaid from Africa, however, Marvela also beholds the trauma of colonial brutality in the cold Atlantic waters. In the poem "Marvela and the Broken Water," these two selected sirens depart from traditional mythology to become agents of resurrection.
