Tour de force.
Mazirian the Magician is the best short story I've ever read. Jack Vance packed it all into the seventeen pages that make up this stirring story that takes place on Vance's famous 'Dying Earth'. It has:
* an intelligent plot, the most important quality of superior books.
* colorful characters, briskly developed
* quickly building tension
* a history of Vance's fascinating version of magic, deftly woven into the tension building.
* once the tension breaks, non-stop action
* mystery
* suspense
* humor
* a marvelously original universe
* beautiful language
* an exciting , surprising, and satisfying finish
Needless to say, I find Mazirian the Magician, by Jack Vance, to be the finest example of the short story form. I recommend to: Everyone.
