Disappointing Conclusion
I used to love the Michael Vey series but this conclusion is shockingly disappointing. There is too much boring/sappy dialogue and not enough of the high voltage action sequences that have made this series enjoyable in the past. Reading this book felt more like a chore than anything else, which is unfortunate considering how amped I was to read it. Evans had everything he needed to develop some electrifying new villains and storylines using the few remaining Elgen factions but chose to toss those aside in favor of a new villain that doesn't have enough time to develop. The 7th book ended the series on a great note and Evans should have pulled the plug then.
Disappointing Series Ending
I wanted to reserve judgement until the very end to see if the landing would stick, but now that it’s through I can say with confidence that this whole followup “trilogy” was really unnecessary. It had a few good moments, but the series could and really should have ended with the initial 7 books. The villains never felt as menacing or serious as Hatch; indeed, I never really felt like there was a “big bad” here on that level. I didn’t like Amash that much, but he still felt more threatening than the big bad from this book (I won’t spoil anything by getting specific). And even that was part of the problem; the big bad from THIS book. Hatch got a 7 book series of buildup, this guy just got this book. You feel no personal connection, you have no feelings towards him at all. The whole trilogy felt like three books of nothing much happening, and some plot points that felt like they were leading somewhere still haven’t been resolved. What about the Domgaurd? The Lung Li? They’re still out there. Kylee and Bryan showed up, and that felt like it was supposed to be a big thing, but they didn’t hardly do anything. All in all a disappointing end to a disappointing run in a series that I once loved.
