Publisher Description
FBI agent Lily Yu’s mind is a dangerous place to be in the latest Novel of the Lupi…
Thanks to the mindspeech lessons she’s receiving from the black dragon, Lily is temporarily benched from Unit Twelve—until her brain acclimates and the risk of total burnout passes. At least she has her new husband, lupi Rule Turner, to keep her occupied.
But when her mentor calls in a favor and sends Lily to a murder scene, she’s suddenly back on active status—despite the hallucinations she can’t keep at bay. With one touch, Lily knows the man was killed by magic, but her senses don’t warn her how far the conspiracy goes…
A shadowy force within the government wants to take Unit Twelve down, and they don't mind killing to achieve their goal. With none of her usual resources, Lily is up against impossible odds--because with her mind in disarray, she can’t trust anything she sees.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
A high-tension plot featuring magically enhanced intra-agency government conspiracy is lightened by affectionate personal and clan relationships and a sprinkling of cuteness in Wilks's 12th World of the Lupi paranormal (after Unbinding). Soon after the disappearance of Mika, the red dragon of Washington, D.C., black dragon Sun Mzao (aka Sam) sends Lily Yu, touch sensitive and member of the FBI's Magical Crimes Division, to a mission in Ohio. Her tasks are made more difficult by her frequent hallucinations a side effect of learning mindspeech and the disturbing effect of physical separation on her psychic link to her mate, clan leader Rule Turner. This intermediary book feels stingy on information and modest in progress within the grander series arc, but it tells a cohesive story on its own, introduces memorable new characters (such as tech-savvy, neuroatypical teen Demi McAllister), discloses more about the mysterious dragons, and puts at least one new enemy on the radar.
