Sanderson's eerie second fantasy (after 2005's Elantris), set in a mist-haunted, ash-ridden world, pits Kelsier, "the Survivor of Hathsin," against the immortal Lord Ruler's 1,000-year domination of both the Great Houses and their serflike "skaa." Through Allomancy acquired in the Ruler's most hellish prison, Kelsier can "burn" 10 metals internally, fueling superhuman powers he uses to assemble rebels in a loose plan to destroy the nobility, the empire and the Lord Ruler himself. Kelsier uses Vin, a street urchin with the same Mistborn powers Kelsier possesses, to infiltrate the Great Houses' society, where she falls in love with philosopher prince Elend Venture. This mystico-metallurgical fantasy combines Vin's coming-of-age-in-magic and its well-worn theme of revolt against oppression with copious mutilations, a large-scale cast of thieves, cutthroats, conniving nobles and exotic mutants. The fast-paced action scenes temper Vin's interminable ballroom intrigues, while the characters, though not profoundly drawn, have a raw stereotypic appeal.

A masterpiece
I’ve tried to read a few different fantasy series lately and neither of them captured my intrigue as quickly and deeply as this. From start to finish, these characters are flawed, unique, and unbelievably lovable. The world set up in this first book has the perfect amount of mystery and detail that keeps you glued to the page. My coworkers recommended this series to me a bit too enthusiastically so I was skeptical. But this was worth every single second. Do yourself favor, clear your schedule, put your devices on do not disturb, and buckle in for this incredible ride. Also, avoid googling ANYTHING, just be patient and this amazing story.
Intelligent Fiction
The series starts in the first book with the overthrow of an empire, looking in books 2 & 3 at what comes *after* that overthrow. I found the series to be well written, and the plot thoughtful and intelligently designed.
A few instances of anachronistic language and several typographic errors (they look like OCR errors?) in the later books drop the score down to 4 stars.
I recommend this series without reservation.
Amazing
This book was absolutely stunning. I couldn’t put it down, the plot was incredible. I highly recommend reading the next two. Most likely should read wax and Wayne though I’m only halfway through the second phase. Can’t wait for a phase 3 mistborn. Thanks Sanderson!
