Mitral Valve Prolapse

The mitral valve sits between the upper and lower chambers on the left side of the heart. Its two small flaps play a key role: making sure that each contraction of the heart pumps oxygenated blood out to the body, instead of backward into one of the upper chambers (the left atrium) of the heart. Although mitral valve prolapse has been with the human race for thousands of years, it was only discovered about 50 years ago.
