A slow start mars debut author Hemmingway's humorous exploration of love, mother/daughter relationships, and technology, but it eventually delivers a powerful message couched in laughs. Crystal Hemmingway (the character) feels like she's almost got it all: she's dating a wonderful man, David; enjoys her job writing product descriptions; and has the freedom to work on her novel. The only problem is her clingy mother, Margot. Not long after Margot invites herself along on David and Crystal's Hawaiian getaway, Crystal's world is turned upside down and she finds herself unemployed, single, and moving in with her mother in San Diego. Lisa, Crystal's sister, is lucky enough to be dealing with their mother from afar, and she gets her sister involved in a pilot project her company is working on an android so lifelike it thinks it's human that Crystal sets up to be Margot's new boyfriend, with predictably hilarious results. The novel is mostly told in texts, emails, and chat transcripts, a format that can occasionally be obnoxious, but the story benefits from the multiple perspectives. The characters' charming quirks and complex relationships can only do so much to make up for the dizzying format and tepid romantic elements. Still, fans of fluffy fiction may find this a pleasant way to pass an afternoon. (BookLife)
