Publisher Description
IN WAR RIGHT CAN GO WRONG AND SOMETIMES WRONG IS THE ONLY RIGHT THING LEFT TO DO.
Anik is a rookie human rights lawyer with a mission to make rape as a weapon of war recognized as a crime against humanity. After she is humiliated by the loss of a high-profile case against a Nazi war criminal who had been hiding out in Canada, she looks for redemption in the world’s largest refugee camp, Dadaab. Against the backdrop of a devastating African civil war, women refugees provide evidence to Anik that atrocities are happening where a UN peacekeeping operation has been deployed. Together with Omar, a renegade politician, Anik embarks on a quest for justice that takes her into deadly conflict with an ambitious UN general and a vicious warlord.

compelling page turner
This book pulled me in from the very first page. It is an eye opening page turner that revealed a new world to me: the way a “peace force” navigates the complex cultural, religious, economic, and power structures in order to complete a successful mission. The book is fictional, but based on Tim Martin’s personal experience as a diplomat. He reveals the insidiousness of intimidation, especially rape, as a way of silencing woman who are struggling to survive in places like Somalia. The protagonist, Anik, is believable and her determination to expose atrocities and overcome her own experience with intimidation is uplifting.
The writing is clear and straight forward which made me read as fast as I could. Don’t fall into the same trap. I heard Tim Martin read excerpts from Moral Hazards and I heard a poignancy that I had missed. He chooses his words thoughtfully, so try to slow down and hear the words as well as read them!
