Publisher Description
“Full of the kind of swift and lusty writing that comes from a healthy, fresh pen.”—Lillian Hellman, New York Herald Tribune
A delightful surprise, Faulkner’s second novel introduces us to a colorful band of passengers on a boating excursion from New Orleans. This engaging, high-spirited novel—which Faulkner wrote “for the sake of writing because it was fun”—offers a fascinating glimpse of Faulkner as a young artist.

My First Faulkner
Sixty-five and I read my first Faulkner..."Mosquitoes".
Rather disappointed. Started strong, great cast of characters, each well drawn and interesting, joined together on a boat, a voyage designed to bring out the deepest desires and fears in each of them.
But it fizzled. Young Faulkner (this his second novel) replaced action with long soliloquies, long and wordy, and long and...did I say long.
I wanted to like it. I actually do kind of like it. But I can't recommend it. Without the incentive of reading my First Faulkner, I don't think I would have made it to the end.
Not giving up on him. Will read one of his classic works written in his artistic maturity.
