Mountaineers Books is proud to present the 10th edition of this master guide, commonly referred to as "Freedom." From
planning a weekend backpacking trip to navigating the logistics of a months-long alpine expedition, from tying knots and hitches to essential belaying and rappelling techniques, from setting up camp in the wilderness to summiting glaciated peaks--this comprehensive textbook written by climbers for climbers covers it all.

Basically saved my friend’s life
The mountaineering bible. I like having it on my phone so I can bring it on expeditions.
Bringing it electronically on an expedition was the right call. My friend was very reluctant to get evac’ed off a mountain after summiting (wanted to go to just go to bed and didn’t see condition as very serious). Upon reading the section on HAPE and HACE, she let herself get evac’ed and taken to the hospital. Turned out she had a serious case of HAPE that wasn’t getting better upon descent. I don’t know what would’ve happened if she’d gone to bed that night, unmonitored.
