Couldn't put this story down!!!
I love the Inspector Witherspoon and Mrs. Jeffries mysteries! The characters are so well fleshed out that they feel like good friends. And each character that rounds out the inspector's household grows a little with each book.
Also I am impressed with the descriptions of society in England, the various cultures of the very poor in London and the upper classes. Each are drawn sympathetically without succumbing to stereotypes. Fascinating insights into Victorian England.
This story in particular had me on the edge of my seat. Complex mystery, many interesting suspects, intriguing plot twists. The victim in this mystery had an especially sad story, and I was anxious for the truth to be found out. Great story as always. I am eagerly working my way through this whole wonderful series. Highly recommend them. I love that there isn't any foul language, sex, or gratuitous violence. And the descriptions of what happens to the victims is short without too much stomach-churning detail. Well done!!!
