She and her husband, Norm, made millions by inventing the toaster knife (a device that toasts bread as it slices), and she now spends her days playing tennis, dealing with the expensive rest home that cares for her 98-year-old father, and shrewdly sidestepping investment pitches from her grown children. Late one night, Loretta receives a phone call from someone claiming to be her beloved grandson, who says he's been arrested for driving while intoxicated and needs bail money. Loretta turns over her bank details, and the following morning, discovers that all of her accounts have been cleaned out. The FBI tells her there's nothing they can do to retrieve the three million dollars she's lost: their only clue is that the perpetrators are located in the small village of Alba Gemina, Romania. With financial pressure mounting, Loretta sets off for Romania herself, determined to shake down the criminals who took her frailty for granted. Mrs. Plansky is a wonderfully memorable heroine, full of wit and equally plausible as an ace tennis player and a motorcycle-driving detective with Romanian gangsters hot on her tail. For the most part - pretty good
Loretta needed a swift kick in the behind for being so naive and ridiculous at times. Really Mr. Quinn??? I don’t think a woman suffering from early onset dementia would have been able to pull off what she did. Also, I didn’t like the end. Why couldn’t Max’s age have been closer to her own? Still, I enjoyed the story. BTW the narrator on the audiobook was excellent

Spencer Quinn is the author of many books, but this is the first I have read from them. This is a cozy mystery book with some crime, adventure and a bit of thrill. Our main character is Mrs. Loretta Plansky, a 70 something year old women who lives in Florida. She is a widow, but her father and grandchildren are still alive. One of them, Will, seemingly calls her asking for a lot of money. However this turns out to be a scam and she loses everything. On the journey to fight back against this scam she finds new meanings for life. I really liked the plot line of this because I've heard horror stories of this, it's something that actually happens and isn't all that rare. But though it's a real life scary topic, it's an enjoyable read. I enjoyed being on the journey with Mrs. Plansky. If you like cozy mysteries I would recommend, I will be looking to read more
