The author was on the faculty
of the International Christian
University in Tokyo for many
years retiring as Professor
Emeritus. He holds the Ph.D.
from the Pennsylvania State
University and the Ph.D. from
the University of London. He
has written books on education
in Japan including The Japanese
School, Ten Great Educators from
Modern Japan, A History of the Japan Teachers Union, and Th e History
of Modern Japanese Education: Constructing the National School System
1872-1890. He and his wife live in Pennsylvania.
