Publisher Description

INTRODUCTION Human resource (HR) development plays an important role in developing the skills of workers in organisations in order to improve productivity and international competitiveness. A well trained, multiskilled workforce has been identified as contributing to the economic success of an organisation through cost reduction and/or increased productivity (Holland & Deery 2002, Stone 2005). The introduction of multiskilling training programmes can thus be a strategic HR development tool to increase the effectiveness of the workforce. A workforce multiskilled through job enlargement, job enrichment, job rotation and cross training (Cordery, Sevastos, Mueller, & Parker 1993, Brusco & Johns 1998) can enable organisations, including hotels, to cope with the seasonal or peak time labour requirements and increased competition for high levels of service (De Cieri & Kramar 2005).
