Publisher Description

It’s two weeks before Halloween and the tricks have already begun in wacky Berkeley, California, when a woman dressed as a China doll is found twisted, bloodied, and dying against a broken mailbox outside the city’s grandest mansion. Turns out she's the socialite wife of a local predatory developer who challenges Clari Drake, former TV star turned has-been reporter, to find the killer. The kinky clues pile up like a basket of bad candy. An old newsroom nemesis, hashish-smoking homeless activists, and nutball neighbors pull back the curtain on the sexual exploits of wealthy Russell Street, forcing Clari to pursue a spanking good story into the darkest corners of the city everyone loves to laugh at. Join Clari Drake on deadline as she navigates the intersection of lust, betrayal, and … podiatry … in the People’s Republic.

Strap-in and Get Ready for the Ride!

A thoroughly charming (and page-turning) sendup of the eccentric, tony, and tie-dyed world of Berkeley, CA--complete with Rastas, the clueless-rich, tree-sitting protestors, New Age crystal adherents, dominatrices, and our intrepid women reporter hoping to establish a journalistic name for herself, flirt with a former-flame police officer, and stay alive long enough to crack the case wide open. (Amazingly, the plot points are all based on real life events.) If you liked "Confederacy of Dunces," think of it taking place in "Bezerkley," and with a murder mystery thrown into the mix. Strap-in and get ready for the ride!

"Murder at the Mailbox" is a great read. Funny, very clever, you will want more. Very fun, especially if you have ever been to or lived in the SF Bay Area. Highly recommended.

Berkeley Super Sleuth Returns

I loved female sleuth Clari Drake in Laura A. Novak’s first outing, “Finding Clarity” and there’s so much more of her to adore in the next book in the series, “Murder at the Mailbox.” It’s quick-paced. set two weeks before Halloween, in the "city by the city by the bay,” Berkeley California. The city shines like a grinning jack -‘o-lantern in this riotous romp with is rooted in the true stories of daily headlines. Novak has created an enduring character in Clari Drake. The author should be set to sign a contract with PBS. Drake is a character in a television series I’d want to binge on.
