Publisher Description

Following on from his successful autobiography “Painting is my Life”, Dutch American artist, Albert Dolmans decided to make a selection of his drawings and to introduce them in book form.  He maintains that drawing is an artist’s most important skill. For Albert himself, it is a gift and a means to an enjoyable pastime. Since he draws mainly for himself, rarely a day passes without his putting pen or pencil to paper to catch something that has struck him, from the imposing to the mundane.

Some drawings are worked out, while others remain a simple sketch of a few lines, but both approaches capture the essence of the subject. His style is naturally influenced by that choice as well as by his mood, and the mood is most often influenced by his sensitive affinity with nature.

This selection of one hundred plus drawings is part of a private collection which Albert calls his diary. It follows the journey of his life, immortalizing what has particularly struck him on his route and reminding him of places and the emotions they evoked in times past. From the awe-inspiring to the most simple: from his home state of California or others, as he crossed that vast and varied continent; through Europe and parts of the Middle East, and back to his roots in the country of his birth, The Netherlands, where an active octogenarian, he now lives and continues to enjoy his creative work. Why not enjoy the trip with him.

What an artist can do with just a few lines is amazing, A feeling of the animals or landscapes drawn in his work is amazing and beautiful.

    My Drawings by Albert Dolmans

Some people often write in a diary to document their lives, travels, or special events. But for Albert Dolmans, an artist of various mediums, his "diary" is composed of remarkable drawings in pen and ink and pencil. With such clarity and emphasis in his lines, his drawings evoke emotions and made me "feel" the scenes, such as the shiver that ran down my spine from studying "Winter in Brabant", with snow piled high on the roof of a barn and a field covered in snow. I could almost smell the fish in Albert Dolmans' drawing of the Dixie Fish Company on a waterfront in Florida! Each drawn line is full of such detail and energy that you almost feel as if you know this or that place. In fact, it is possible that you have been to places shown in his drawings and have stood in the same places the artist stood as he composed his drawings. Albert Dolmans has traveled back and forth across the United States numerous times and also has traveled to many European countries and into the Middle East, drawing almost daily to record life as he saw it. In places famous, or perhaps not so famous, Albert Dolmans documented in drawings, the countryside, wildlife, architecture, historical sites, city streets and buildings with people all about, at work and at play. It is as if he was a part of "Urban Sketching" long before it came in to existence! His travels back to his country of birth, the Netherlands, where he now lives after many years of living in California, are represented by lovely drawings including windmills, harbors, cathedrals, farms and villages. This book has something of interest to just about everyone. It opens up the world to us as Albert Dolmans saw it and documented it, one drawing at a time. It is wonderful book of over a hundred works of art. If you want to see more of his art, look for Albert Dolmans' other book, Painting is My Life, another great read.
