A Timeless Smoke
This is a lovely book. It is also a sad book, at least for the pipe-smoker. The ending detracts from the overall milieu of the highly entertaining tales the character tells. This, I think is necessary though. The stories of joviality and happiness only act as a bulwark, delaying the inevitable. It makes one think of how finite and frail everyday luxuries are. The book tears through the emotional veneer of the reader and finds a commonplace between all who engage with this novel. The life lessons shared and funny anecdotes provided are concepts any generation can relate. Apart from this, it also serves as a unique glimpse at the sociological norms of the time. Behavior and ideals such as, excessive smoking and the attitude toward women are present in a multitude of chapters. The historical significance of this work is endless. Overall, it is a unique piece of literature, I highly recommend to all.
