Horror meets humorous urban fantasy in first book of the White Trash Zombie series • Winner of the 2012 Best Urban Fantasy Protagonist by the RT Awards
Angel Crawford is a Loser.
Living with her alcoholic deadbeat dad in the swamps of southern Louisiana, she's a high school dropout with a pill habit and a criminal record who's been fired from more crap jobs than she can count. Now on probation for a felony, it seems that Angel will never pull herself out of the downward spiral her life has taken.
That is, until the day she wakes up in the ER after overdosing on painkillers. Angel remembers being in a horrible car crash, but she doesn't have a mark on her. To add to the weirdness, she receives an anonymous letter telling her there's a job waiting for her at the county morgue—and that it's an offer she doesn't dare refuse.
Before she knows it she's dealing wth a huge crush on a certain hunky deputy and a brand new addiction: an overpowering craving for brains. Plus, her morgue is filling up with the victims of a serial killer who decapitates his prey—just when she's hungriest!
Angel's going to have to grow up fast if she wants to keep this job and stay in one piece. Because if she doesn't, she's dead meat.
An intriguing mystery and a hilarious mix of the horrific and mundane aspects of zombie life open a promising new series from Rowland (Secrets of the Demon). Angel Crawford, a high school dropout on probation for possession of a stolen car, wakes up in a hospital with a confused memory of horrible injuries now mysteriously vanished and an anonymous benefactor setting her up with a job at the local morgue. Angel's problems with her alcoholic father, petty-criminal boyfriend Randy, handsome cop Marcus, and obnoxious co-worker Nick are overshadowed by her new appetite for the brains of the corpses she handles. Then Angel encounters a trio of odd deaths and starts tracking a serial killer with a habit of beheading his victims. Humor and gore are balanced by surprisingly touching moments as Angel tries to turn her (un)life around.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The lead character is a spunky and a fierce chick.
I enjoyed this book SO much. Can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
Love the series, but....
I knew nothing about the author or the series, but I was browsing the clearance section of a bookstore that was closing and the cover then title caught my eye. I went into this expecting comedy and that's not what you get with this. It has its laughs, but this is more of drama with some dark comedy thrown in. I LOVE the series and can't wait for the 6th installment, but just know the title can lead you to making some false assumptions about the book.
