Introduction Stem cells are key players in the development and maintenance of specific mammalian tissues, and their presence has been long established in blood, skin and intestine. A general definition of stem cell is "a cell that is capable of both self renewal and differentiation". Stem cells are considered multipotent; since they can produces mature cell types of one or more lineages but cannot reconstitute the organism as a whole.
