News From Nowhere

Frequently studied alongside works like Edward Bellamy's Looking Backward, William Morris' News From Nowhere was originally published in 1890. Combining utopian socialism with science fiction, the book tells the story of narrator William Guest and his finding himself in a future society after falling asleep at a meeting of the Socialist League. This future is based on the principles of common ownership, where there is no private property, authority, monetary system, divorce, court system, prison or class structure. While notable for many reasons, Morris' work is most celebrated for its fusing of Marxist ideas and the romantic literary tradition.
