Nidworth and His Three Magic Wands

This is a completely rewritten story, not a PDF or OCR version with a lot of garbage characters!  This is an old-fashioned Fairy Tale in a “beautiful and mystical land.”  Though there is magic in the story, it is used as a means to teach some very valuable lessons.  This story is free from any unwholesome language or inappropriate behavior and is a great choice for school literature class for ages 12 and up.  Mature subjects are addressed, so that younger children may not enjoy this story. 


When a mysterious stranger gives Nidworth first one magic wand, and then another, an adventure begins that changes his life and his family forever.  Which wand will bring Nidworth happiness - a wand that produces riches?  One that yields knowledge?  Surely, Nidworth will be content having one of the wands!  But as misfortune follows misfortune, his heart is as empty as his head is full.  Will a third wand set things right?  Follow Nidworth’s journey in this masterfully written vintage novel, as he transforms into a man of character who turns his little town upside down.


Elizabeth Prentiss wrote over two dozen books including fiction, poetry, and hymns.   Her husband, Reverend George Prentiss, wrote: Her pen moved always and only under a sense of duty.  She held her talent as a gift from God, and consecrated it sacredly to the enforcement and diffusion of His truth.

In Nidworth, first published in 1869, Mrs. Prentiss has skillfully woven into the story her own theory of a happy life.  She wrote the book with intense delight, and its strange characters seemed to her, for a while, almost as real as if she had copied them from life.  The original publishers (Roberts Brothers) pronounced Nidworth “a gem”.  It certainly contains some of the author's brightest pictures of life and character.
