#1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts introduces an unforgettable thief in an unputdownable new novel…
Greed. Desire. Obsession. Revenge . . . It’s all in a night’s work.
Harry Booth started stealing at nine to keep a roof over his ailing mother’s head, slipping into luxurious, empty homes at night to find items he could trade for precious cash. When his mother finally succumbed to cancer, he left Chicago—but kept up his nightwork, developing into a master thief with a code of honor and an expertise in not attracting attention?or getting attached.
Until he meets Miranda Emerson, and the powerful bond between them upends all his rules. But along the way, Booth has made some dangerous associations, including the ruthless Carter LaPorte, who sees Booth as a tool he controls for his own profit. Knowing LaPorte will leverage any personal connection, Booth abandons Miranda for her own safety—cruelly, with no explanation—and disappears.
But the bond between Miranda and Booth is too strong, pulling them inexorably back together. Now Booth must face LaPorte, to truly free himself and Miranda once and for all.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
We love a dapper criminal with a serious conscience—making the star of this suspenseful romance damn near irresistible. Thief Harry Booth learned his craft as a kid, pickpocketing on the streets of Chicago to support his dying mother. He’s now an adult, but old habits die hard. Harry still regularly breaks into upscale homes in only the most affluent neighborhoods—until true love changes his life forever. Nora Roberts yanks at our heartstrings as the detached Harry finally forges a real human connection with his college crush Miranda. But his blossoming romance is thrown into jeopardy when he’s targeted by the evil manipulator Carter LaPorte, whose obsession with ruining Harry forces him to push Miranda away. A story of love and desire as well as jealousy and survival, this heart-wrenching novel is as exciting as it is achingly romantic. Harry’s world is full of strong women, beautiful locales, and impending danger, and once you enter, you’ll never want to leave.
The latest romantic suspense novel from bestseller Roberts (Legacy) is a master class in the slow burn, blending heartrending emotion and thrills to deeply satisfying effect. Harry Booth spends his childhood becoming an exceptional thief to support his ailing mother and, after her death, builds a freewheeling and detached life for himself as a young man. He falls in love with Miranda Emerson during a stint in college in North Carolina, but threats from vicious criminal mastermind Carter LaPorte, whose attention Booth caught years earlier, force him to break Miranda's heart to protect her. Twelve years later, Booth encounters Miranda again, and he realizes that to build a life with her, he'll need to deal with LaPorte permanently. The story delivers all the hallmarks that make Roberts so beloved: charming characters, alluring settings, unconventional chosen families, heartfelt romance, and riveting action. The unhurried pace allows for an organic accumulation of essential elements as intense emotion builds, but risks losing less patient readers. Those who trust Roberts's sure hand to guide them along, however, will find themselves on an immersive and moving outing in the company of a beguiling thief. This is a treat.
I enjoyed this story, I did find parts of it hard to follow or know what the writer was trying to say. I like that I could completely imagine sitting right inside the world watching things happen.
Have loved NB for over 20 years and while the premise of this book was interesting, the plot was fairly weak. So much story building for an ending that was wrapped way too simply.
